Eccl.3:11 – Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
Twenty years ago we had the first performance of Beyond the Grave. I really wasn’t thinking very much about it. Victory Fellowship had been putting on productions for many years. We had singing and acting and costumes and even some great crowds. You couldn’t really say that there was that very much eternal impact though. The church came out, a few friends and relatives attended, after all it was usually Easter or Christmas. All we really hoped for that Halloween weekend of 1999 was two well attended performances and some people won to Christ. Boy, was I ever in for a shocking surprise. Here we are twenty years later and over 400 performances later and Beyond the Grave is still being performed and winning souls. Over 75,000 salvation books have be given out at the altar. There are people attending churches all over South east Louisiana and the Gulf Coast that came to the Lord at a Beyond the Grave performance.
So what is it about Beyond the Grave that causes it to keep going on for so many years? The cast has changed every year, the script has been written again and again almost every year. Actually, it has nothing to do with actors, sets, music, or marketing. It has everything to do with today’s scripture verse. Go ahead, take a minute and read it again and see if you get it. The answer is that one Word, ETERNITY. The Lord has put eternity in all of our hearts. Everyone knows (if they are honest with themselves) that there is a God and that we will all live forever. The question Beyond the Grave answers and the Bible answers is what will that eternity look like? Even more importantly, what will your eternity look like. This generation (yep- even those millennials) need to be confronted with the question of all questions? If you were to die today where would you spend eternity. Humans want the truth. Rather than some lame Santa Claus God (minus the coal and switches) humans really want to be confronted with the truth. What is the truth? That’s even what Pontius Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth?”. Well here it is and this is why Beyond the Grave is still a powerful force.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
I believe in Jesus, what about you?
