2 Tim.1:6 – For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

This passage is especially relevant in today’s world when there is so much pressure to neglect spiritual gifts or to abandon them altogether. Paul recognized the importance of the anointing in our lives, especially when we are facing dark and difficult times. Paul was close to the end of his life facing the executioner’s axe shortly after this letter was written. As Paul wrote from the shadow of his execution he emphasized the value of stirring up the supernatural gift of God in our lives. His words to Timothy are words for us today. Here is how Matthew Henry described this verse. Remember when you received the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands. Don’t let that gift go dormant, stir it up.

“He exhorts him to stir up the gift of God that was in him. Stir it up as fire under the embers. It is meant of all the gifts and graces that God had given him, to qualify him for the work of an evangelist, the gifts of the Holy Ghost, the extraordinary gifts that were conferred by the imposition of the apostle’s hands. These he must stir up; he must exercise them and so increase them: use gifts and have gifts. To him that hath shall be given. He must take all opportunities to use these gifts, and so stir them up, for that is the best way of increasing them. Whether the gift of God in Timothy was ordinary or extraordinary (though I incline to the latter), he must stir it up, otherwise it would decay….It is probable that Timothy had the Holy Ghost, in his extraordinary gifts and graces, conferred on him by the laying on of the apostle’s hands…”

The supernatural nature of our Christian faith is essential in this secular society we live in. Everything is being challenged. Our national identity and destiny is being attacked. The power of the Holy Spirit is scoffed at by much of the Christian Church. Sexual purity and abstention from alcohol are no longer the practice of much of the Christian community. Without the power of God we will just gradually blend into the rest of the world’s culture. So what do we do? Stir it up !! Stir up the gift of the Holy Spirit in your life. Be filled with the Spirit speaking to yourself in Psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs making melody with your heart to the Lord.
