Rom. 13:11 ¶ And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
As Paul was finishing his letter to the Romans he began to plead with the Roman Christians to wake up. He was struck with the sense of urgency, he was struck with an awareness of the eternal day. In the next verse he says, “The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light”. The great day of the Lord is upon us; that day when it will never be night time again, tears will all be wiped away, sickness and death will be non-existent, and the glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Why was Paul so stirred? It was because so many people were blinded by the darkness, unaware of the kingdom of God that is literally breaking in on us. If that was true in
60 A.D. how about now? Signs of His return are all round us. Creation is in the midst of the transition of birth pangs, the spirit of antichrist is becoming more deeply rooted in the government, the churches are asleep and void of power; I think it may be time to wake up. Here are some comments from Matthew Henry on today’s verse.
“Now is our salvation nearer than when we believed—than when we first believed, and so took upon us the profession of Christianity. The eternal happiness we chose for our portion is now nearer to us than it was when we became Christians. Let us mind our way and mend our pace, for we are now nearer our journey’s end than we were when we had our first love. The nearer we are to our center the quicker should our motion be. Is there but a step between us and heaven, and shall we be so very slow and dull in our Christian course, and move so heavily? The more the days are shortened, and the more grace is increased, the nearer is our salvation, and the more quick and vigorous we should be in our spiritual motions.”
There is just a step, one heart beat from us and the eternal shore. The kingdom of God is all around us. Lord, send your light and awaken all of us from our sleep.
