Rom. 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

This is one of those verses that I somehow missed or overlooked over the years when I read Romans. Romans has always been one of my favorite books and I have read it often in my Christian journey. Just think for a minute about this incredible truth or promise found in today’s verse. I can finally put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit. Those troubling temptations can be finally dead. Those troubling worries can be annihilated. The fears can be driven out and those foul habits can be banished for good. How does this work? Paul said it was by the Spirit. What does he mean by that? He means that we can walk in the Spirit and destroy all of those sinful tendencies from our lives. Walking in the Spirit means just that, drawing near to God’s presence, basking in His anointing, stirring up His Spirit in our lives; this drastically effects everything about our lives. It changes what we love and what we want to do. This is the beginning of a passionate, joyful, victorious life. Here is how the Fire Bible describes this.
“We ‘put to death the misdeeds of the body’ by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to resist and overcome temptations. But we must not only resist temptation; we must also replace ungodly desires with godly pursuits, practices and purposes. Rather than allowing our minds to be consumed with evil and impure thoughts, we must think about things that are true, honorable, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy in God’s view (Php 4:8). If we want our sinful desires to die, we must refuse to feed them. Therefore, we are careful about what we watch, listen to, think about, practice and expose ourselves to in any way. We must intentionally choose to focus our time, attention, energy and passion on things that help us grow spiritually and allow us to fulfill God’s purposes for our lives. The spiritual disciplines of spending time in prayer, God’s Word, worship and true Christian service will help develop our spiritual strength to resist and overcome temptations.”
So are your troubled today? Maybe you are under condemnation or even deception because you just can’t stop those old, nasty habits. This is the way out, it is the way of death and the way of life. You can be finally dead and finally alive if you start drinking of His Spirit.
