UNEXPECTED JOY

Delight thyself also in the Lord.
Ps.37:4
Let’s face it, at the end of the day everyone basically does what they enjoy. Smokers smoke, drinkers drink, potheads huff, and sex addicts; well you know the rest. It’s not that joy is in itself evil, after all, the pursuit of joy is one of the basic ingredients placed in all of us by the Lord. The problem is this, we are all twisted. Our fallen nature has perverted our lives to the point that we want things that are destructive. In a perfect world (before the fall) our delight would be in God Himself. Our fallen nature longs for everything but God. That’s why today’s verse is so ridiculous to fallen man. Joy and God are not in the same universe. At least that is true until; until God renovates our being. To those who have been truly born again, delighting in God becomes our life. Here is how Charles Spurgeon described it.
“The life of the believer is here described as a delight in God, and we are thus certified of the great fact that true religion overflows with happiness and joy. Ungodly persons and mere professors never look upon religion as a joyful thing; to them it is service, duty, or necessity, but never pleasure or delight. If they attend to religion at all, it is either that they may gain thereby, or else because they dare not do otherwise. The thought of delight in religion is so strange to most men, that no two words in their language stand further apart than holiness and delight. But believers who know Christ, understand that delight and faith are so blessedly united, that the gates of hell cannot prevail to separate them. They who love God with all their hearts, find that his ways are ways of pleasantness, and all his paths are peace. Such joys, such brimful delights, such overflowing blessednesses, do the saints discover in their Lord, that so far from serving him from custom, they would follow him though all the world cast out his name as evil.”
So the pursuit of God has no hidden agenda. It’s not so we will go to heaven, it’s not so we will be healed, it’s not so we will be financially blessed. All of those things will happen but they are not the treasure. God is the treasure. Once you discover joy in God there is nothing anyone can do to mess up your life, God alone will be more than enough.

  1. I have concluded that God, Himself is what we need to truly live. I compare myself to a dragster. The world and all it offers is at best the lowest grade fuel. Fill me up with that and can run and sputter down the track. God, Himself is what I was made for or He is that high octane fuel and He alone is the only source. Fill me up with that and I realize my full potential. Prayer, worship, and reading His word is the fuel pump. (The list is not limited to those ways)
It is crazy how I run to Him for direction or whatever and His guidance is without parallel yet it is Him that I need. Not long in His presence and there it is, that CrAzY joy that makes no human sense. Happened just yesterday as I prayed with my daughter. He came into the room and I had to wrap up the prayer because my brain turned to that joyful jello. \o/ I got the joy and she got the job!
