THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

Psa. 85:13 Righteousness will go before Him,
And shall make His footsteps our pathway.
Righteousness can be a tricky business. Our minds naturally go to a certain creed or code to live by. The Bible clearly teaches that only one human ever lived a righteous life. All of us fall miserably short. The best among us are clothed in the filthy garments of human righteousness. That’s where the real problems begin, nothing unclean can have fellowship with the Holy God. It is unthinkable for any sin to approach His presence. Actually, all of those sins require judgement. God is just and no sin can be overlooked. That’s where that one righteous man comes in. Th righteous one is Jesus Christ. He came to satisfy the justice of God against our sins. That’s why He came; that’s why He died. The good news is that whoever believes in His sacrificial death for their sins is declared righteous; this is the righteousness of faith. Here is how Adam Clarke, the great Methodist theologian, sees it.
“Perhaps this verse may receive its best solution from Rom. iii. 25: “Whom God hath set for a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his RIGHTEOUSNESS for the remission of sins that are past.” This term the apostle uses to point out God’s method of justifying or saving mankind. And this, in the preaching of the pure Gospel, is ever going before to point out the Lord Jesus, and the redemption that is in his blood. And thus going before him, the sinner, who feels his need of salvation, is Set-in the way of his steps; as Bartimeus sat by the way-side begging, by which way Jesus walked; and when he came where he was, heard his prayer, and restored him his sight. Or, righteousness-the pure and holy law of God, must be proclaimed as broken by sinners, and calling aloud for vengeance, before they can see and feel their need of Christ crucified. By the preaching of the law they are prepared to receive the grace of the Gospel.”
I love those old, forgotten words. Propitiation, to satisfy the justice of God against sin, is the greatest of all news. Though my sins had stained my soul with darkness, the death of Christ in my place has made me whiter than snow. I am now righteous. The righteous deeds of Christ are considered mine by faith in Christ.
