PORTRAITS OF CHRIST

Dan. 11:32 Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.

Paul’s famous prayer in Ephesians talks about having the eyes of our heart opened that we may know Him. Knowing God is the beginning of our spiritual life. In today’s verse, Daniel says that knowing God is connected to doing ‘great exploits’. How are these two things, knowing Christ and doing great exploits, connected? It is apparent that having our eyes opened to God’s great love for us marks the beginning of doing things passionately in this life. Why is that? Before knowing Christ our motivation is just improving our situation in this life. When our eyes glimpse His glory, the other world becomes real and becomes the source of inspiration and power. Here are some thoughts from Spurgeon on this verse from Daniel.
“Every believer understands that to know God is the highest and best form of knowledge; and this spiritual knowledge is a source of strength to the Christian. It strengthens his faith. Believers are constantly spoken of in the Scriptures as being persons who are enlightened and taught of the Lord; they are said to have an unction from the Holy One, and it is the Spirit’s peculiar office to lead them into all truth, and all this for the increase and the fostering of their faith. Knowledge strengthens love, as well as faith. Knowledge opens the door, and then through that door we see our Savior. Or, to use another similitude, knowledge paints the portrait of Jesus, and when we see that portrait then we love him, we cannot love a Christ whom we do not know, at least, in some degree. If we know but little of the excellences of Jesus, what he has done for us, and what he is doing now, we cannot love him much; but the more we know him, the more we shall love him.”
I love this thought, knowledge paints the portrait of Jesus. What kind of portrait have you been looking at? Christ in eternity, the only Son of the Father; the Healer opening the eyes of the blind and cleansing the lepers, or maybe the One who stills the storm and walks on water, or maybe the One Who drives out demons with His words, or maybe the Holy One Who cleanses His Father’s house. Let the Holy Spirit paint a beautiful portrait of Christ in your life today, He is making all things new in your life starting now.
