ETERNALLY BEGOTTEN SON

Heb. 1:5 ¶ For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son,

today I have begotten you?

In today’s verse we catch a glimpse of the Father and the Son in eternity. Jesus spoke of this in His high priestly prayer in Gethsemane. It’s time Father. Its time for restoration. Its time for me to step back into the glory I enjoyed with you from eternity. This is a glimpse of the uniqueness of eternal Sonship. We are adopted sons, created in the image of God and born again into this new life. With Christ it is different. He has always been the Father’s Son, even from the days before the dawn of creation. He entered into creation as the son of man born of the virgin Mary, He was born in eternity as the Son of the Father without an earthly mother. Here is how Andrew Murray describes the mystery of eternal generation.

“And if we ask how this can be done, our answer is the second great lesson taught us by the truth that Christ is the Son of God! It was by being begotten of God, by a divine birth, that Christ became the Son. In eternity it was a birth; in the resurrection it was a birth from the dead. And so it is only by a divine birth that the Son, that the love of God, can enter and possess us. It is by an eternal generation that the Son is God. In eternity there is no past; what God is and does is all in the infinite power of an ever-present now. And so it is in the power of that eternal generation that the Father begetteth us in His Son, and begetteth His Son in us; that the Father speaks the eternal Word to us and in us. The Word of God is the Son, coming from the heart of the Father, spoken into our hearts, and dwelling there. The Son is the Love of God; as the Son, so the Love of God is begotten within us, making us, by a new birth, partakers of its own nature and blessedness.”

Thinking back to that prayer in Gethsemane now we understand a little more of God’s incredible plan of redemption. He prayed that we too could be one with the Father and the Son. That’s why Jesus came and that is our heavenly inheritance.
