THE VOICE OF GENTLE SILENCE

MERRY MONDAY BY PARRIS BAILEY

“And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. So it was when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What are you doing here, Elijah?” 1 Kings 19:12, 13.

Simpson said, “The sweetest blessing that Christ brings us is the Sabbath rest of the soul, of which the Sabbath of creation was the type; the Land of Promise, God’s great object lesson. There is for the heart that will cease from itself “the peace of God that passeth all understanding”; “a quietness and confidence” which is the source of all strength; a sweet peace which “nothing can offend”; a deep rest which “the world can neither give nor take away.” There is, in the deepest center of the soul, a chamber of peace where God dwells, and where, if we will only enter in and hush every other sound, we can hear His still, small voice. So the Holy Ghost loves to begin in “the day of small things.” He loves to speak to us in “the still, small voice,” to show us that we are not very far off. There is no sweeter expression of confidence than a whispered secret. The blessed Holy Ghost comes to us with the faintest touches of His breath; and if we do not recognize Him in these small beginnings, we shall not see their growth and development, and we shall wonder all our days why we did not get the blessing. We are looking for wind and rain, for a cyclone of power, for electric storms, when the air is full of divine electric fire. We have only to make the connection, to take it as we need it, and to turn it on to all the machinery of our life.”

Years ago while at bible school one our classmates told us about how he asked or should I say begged Jesus to make himself visible when he was alone in his room. He said heard a noise and screamed! I always smile when I think of that. But really Jesus comes in so many ways, in every moment and largely through His written word. Recently one of our staff members slept over at our house and woke up to find Jesus sitting at the end of his bed. He said all he could do was cry. I love it when he comes in the gentle silence. There his something powerful in the still small voice. The eternal stillness. The best place of all is before the feet of Christ. Then we awake in the arms of His love. If you notice all the sounds Elijah heard was just noise at the end of the day. They had no voice of importance, no presence in them. Learn to shut out the noise today and listen to the voice of His gentle eternal silence. His voice will steer your day and head you in the right direction. Listening to the rabble of the world or your own head will only lead to doubt fear and unbelief.
