EXCESSIVE JOY

Psa. 43:4 Then I will go to the altar of God,

To God my exceeding joy;

And on the harp I will praise You,

O God, my God.

David has obviously tasted something of God that is rare and precious but is also available for all of us today. Jesus said ‘whosoever will’ can drink of this joy; that obviously includes us. This ‘exceeding joy’ was poured out on me and in our church beginning in 1994. Still today, almost 21 years later ‘whosoever will’ is getting a good dose of this joy. Just last Wednesday night I watched after service as several girls from Marysong, our restoration center, were on the floor experiencing this overwhelming, excessive joy that David sang about. This joy is not only incredibly enjoyable, it has lasting results in our lives. It is the overflow of God’s powerful presence, when He is there anything can happen. From physical healing to internal therapy God is there doing His amazing work. Lives are being made holy and the people actually like it. Here are some observations from Spurgeon’s Treasury of David.

“Note the holy rapture with which David regards his Lord! He is not his joy alone, but his exceeding joy; not the fountain of joy, the giver of joy, or the maintainer of joy, but that joy itself. The margin hath it, “The gladness of my joy”, the soul, the essence, the very bowels of my joy. To draw near to God, who is such a joy to us, may well be the object of our hungering and thirsting. Yea, upon the harp will I praise thee. His best music for his best love. When God fills us with joy we ought ever to pour it out at his feet in praise, and all the skill and talent we have should be laid under contribution to increase the divine revenue of glory. O God, my God. How he dwells upon the name which he loves so well! He already harps on it as though his harp music had begun. What sweeter sounds can music know than four words? To have God in possession, and to know it by faith, is the heart’s heaven—a fulness of bliss lies therein.”

So let’s follow after David to the altar of God,we can enter with boldness, our shame is gone, as we come into His presence by the blood of the Lamb. In that place we begin to dance and sing like David did, we have come to the place of God’s excessive joy.
