A SIGN SPOKEN AGAINST

Luke 2:25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

Luke 2:26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

Simeon knew first hand about persecution that comes in response to the anointing. According to Matthew Henry, Simeon had been an important religious leader in Israel. Supposedly, Simeon’s dad was Hillel, the founder of the Sanhedrin. Simeon had somehow received a prophetic anointing of the Spirit and had changed his thoughts about the role of the coming Messiah. Rather than a political leader, Simeon began to talk about the Messiah as a suffering servant, not exactly what the religious leaders with political aspirations had in mind. It is said that Simeon was removed from his position because of this anointing upon his life. Simeon knew first hand about the power and the price of the anointing. Here is Simeon’s prophesy about Christ and comments made about it from Arthur Wallis.

“‘Behold, this child is set for the falling and rising up of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against . . . that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.’

Luke 2:34–35

“Thus spoke the aged Simeon as he held the long-promised Savior in his arms. Thirty years elapsed, and then the prophecy was fulfilled as Christ stood in manhood in the synagogue at Nazareth with the roll of the book in His hand. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,” He read, “because he anointed me to preach good tidings . . .” (Luke 4:18). Then He began to preach, applying the Word in the power of the Spirit to the consciences of His hearers. Soon their wonder gave place to wrath, and they “cast him forth out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill . . . that they might throw him down headlong” (4:29). Thus, from the time that He commenced to preach and work in the power of the Spirit, He became “a sign which is spoken against . . that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.”

As much as the world changes, nothing ever really changes. Just as Simeon experienced persecution because of the anointing, so did the Lord Himself. From the first day He announced “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me…”, He was a marked man. Today is no different. Revival always brings a response, usually it starts with the religious crowd. The anointing is not the way to win friends and influence people, it is the way to change the world.
