HEAVENLY PLACES

John 3:13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

“How can someone enter into his mother’s womb and be born again.” Nicodemus couldn’t quite get it. He was a great spiritual teacher in Israel yet he was struggling to understand spiritual truth. He was shocked, how could someone be born a second time? Then Jesus made things even worse for Nicodemus, “No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.” Whatever could this mean? Who is the Son of man. How can He be in heaven and on earth at the same time. Nicodemus had to be born again. None of it makes sense to any of us until we too are born again. Spiritual truth seems foreign to us, like a different language, until suddenly someone switches the light on. Suddenly we see it, how could we have been so blind? Here is how Augustine saw this verse.

“Behold, He was here, and was also in heaven; was here in His flesh, in heaven by His divinity; yea, everywhere by His divinity. Born of a mother, not quitting the Father. Two nativities of Christ are understood: one divine, the other human: one, that by which we were to be made; the other, that by which we were to be made anew: both marvelous; that without mother, this without father. But because He had taken a body of Adam,–for Mary was of Adam,–and was about to raise that same body again, it was an earthly thing He had said in saying, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” But this was a heavenly thing, when He said, “Except a man be born again of water and of the Spirit, he shall not see the kingdom of God.” Come then, brethren! God has willed to be the Son of man; and willed men to be sons of God. He came down for our sakes; let us ascend for His sake.”

This verse reminds me of what Paul taught in Ephesians. Eph. 2:4-6 ¶ But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,” just as Jesus was seated in heavenly places while being here on earth as a man, we too are seated in heavenly places. That’s why we don’t fit into the culture of this world. Once you are born again you take on the nature of the other world. Like Nicodemus struggled to understand, we too struggle until the wind begins to blow. The wind of God finally awakens us to live this new life of the Spirit.

  1. I agree completely with ” Spiritual truth seems foreign to us, like a different language, until suddenly someone switches the light on. Suddenly we see it, how could we have been so blind?”
Prior to my rebirth I had questions, lots of questions and even more doubts. Once I met Jesus, all my questions seemed irrelevant and doubt, we’ll how can you doubt?
I surely don’t understand everything but there is no doubt in my mind that God is alive and well and rightfully seated on His throne controlling all things! Often asking myself, ” How could I have not seen this?”
