Acts 2:17 ‘And it will be in the last days,’ declares God, ‘that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
As a young Christian I was mesmerized by people who were used by the anointing. I remember one guest speaker at our Bible College who moved in the anointing. There were healings, words of knowledge, and people falling under the power of The Lord. I remember my fellow students talking about those meetings and wondering what it took to be used by God in the anointing We thought it was for the ultra spiritual and would take years to get to that “level”. That was before I understood the charisma or the gifts of God’s grace that accompany the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is being poured out on all mankind in these days. Anyone who is thirsty can not only drink but can be a channel for the water of the Spirit to flow through in the power of signs and wonders. This revelation was a part of the reformation. Here is something Luther said about this powerful verse.
“Flesh, that is every kind of person. “There will be no distinction, I will pour out the Holy Spirit
From heaven, so that all people may prophesy”. Therefore the Levitical priesthood will be revoked and a new priesthood will be established, as he indicates by “your sons, daughters, and my servants.” This means “every kind of flesh” or person. I will accept women, young girls, and I will teach them all how they should prophesy. Slaves will enter [the prophetic] office! just like Anna and the young girls. Therefore the [old] priestly courses are abolished. Against this the Jews cannot assert that we abolish [the priesthood altogether]. For our preaching office must be correct, and it is not hampered just because it is not from the tribes of Aaron. Peter was not from the priestly estate, nor were any of the apostles, nor was Christ. This new office is not started by priests but by others from the other tribes… Here Joel says every kind of person can be bishop, priest, pope and cardinal. This is a powerful text that throws down the priesthood.”
The Old Testament was characterized by limited availability to the anointing. Only prophets and priests and occasionally a king would experience the anointing upon their lives. That changed dramatically after the day of Pentecost. Peter spoke from Joel’s prophesy on the day of Pentecost saying that the day Joel spoke of had come. All people can now experience the power of the Spirit. In Luther’s day, the church had digressed and no longer allowed the common man to experience the anointing. The church had moved toward a professional clergy mentality and they only moved in a form of godliness. Luther began to proclaim that all of us are candidates to be used by the Spirit.
