HE IS JEALOUS FOR ME

HE IS JEALOUS FOR ME

2Cor. 11:2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

What a strange God we have. He said in Deut. 4:24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Doesn’t that seem strange to you. We normally think of jealousy as a bad thing, but God calls Himself a jealous God. He is jealous for me. He wants and craves my affection. He wants to be the center of my desires. Most people don’t see the intimate, passionate side of our God. Until you see His love for you, you can never enter into the pleasurable nature of Christianity. This love begins in us with just a glimpse, a glimpse of His unsearchable love revealed to us in the death of His Son. This love is experienced as the Holy Spirit comes upon us and gives us a taste of this calvary love. He loves me! He is jealous for me! He doesn’t want to share my love with His creation. He calls that idolatry. We recently began to revisit a song called How He Loves by John Mark McMillan that we sang in church several years ago. Don’t skip over the words (I know many of you have heard them a thousand times). Let them sink in, actually taste the love of this jealous God. Enjoy!

“And He is jealous for me, loves like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions
Eclipsed by glory and I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great Your affections are for me

And we are His portion and He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If His grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking

And heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about the way

Oh, how He loves us, oh
Oh, how He loves us, how He loves all
How He loves

Yeah, He loves us, oh, how He loves us
Oh, how He loves us, oh how He loves
Oh, I love”

There is quite a lot of theology in the words of this song. First, it speaks of God’s jealous love, His longing for intimacy. Next, it speaks to us of the power of the wind of the Holy Spirit, His relentless love is as persistent as a hurricane. Then, the incredible ability of the glory of God to overshadow all the adversity we experience in this life. The verse then moves on to speak of us being God’s portion and Him being our prize, this is the conclusion we have to come to when we drink this love in. He is like no other. Of course we can’t forget the incredible attraction of His grace, the bottomless ocean of His love, and the surprising ecstasy in the unforeseen kiss. When I am loved like this, it is impossible to maintain regrets about my past. He is jealous for me.
