OUR ELDER BROTHER

OUR ELDER BROTHER

Rom. 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Our heritage, our family, has a lot to say about who we are. Being born into a certain family may bring tremendous responsibility as well as tremendous privilege. I think about the two princes, William and Harry, heirs to the British throne. These two young men were born with opportunities and wealth than not many others can even imagine. They were raised in opulence; traveled the world, lived in mansions, educated in the finest universities, and one will probably be the King of England. Along with the privileges comes the responsibility. The eyes of the media, and the world, follow their every move. Foolish actions can lead to embarrassment at best and possibly international scandal. For us as Christians, we also have a royal heritage. God is our Father and Jesus Christ is our elder brother. We have a heritage and an inheritance that far surpasses anything the British Crown can offer. Charles Spurgeon recognized the importance of this heritage. Here is something he said about our elder brother.

“Oh, what relationship there is between Christ and the believer! The believer can say, I have a Brother in heaven; I may be poor, but I have a Brother who is rich, and is a King, and will he suffer me to want while he is on his throne? Oh, no! He loves me; he is my Brother. Believer, wear this blessed thought, like a necklace of diamonds, around the neck of thy memory; put it, as a golden ring, on the finger of recollection, and use it as the King’s own seal, stamping the petitions of thy faith with confidence of success. He is a brother born for adversity, treat him as such.”

What an amazing truth, I am a fellow heir with Jesus Christ. That is an incredibly strong statement. If it is true, my inheritance is unlimited or infinite. The Lord is the “Possessor of heaven and earth”, He is owner of all things. The Bible states that I am a joint heir with Jesus Christ. Spurgeon said that this elder brother was born for adversity. He became one of us because of our poverty and miserable condition. He has purchased us with His blood, sent the Spirit of adoption into our hearts, and He has claimed us as His own. William and Harry never have to wonder about their privileges as heirs to the British throne, it’s part of who they are. They were born into royalty. In the same way, we were born into a heavenly royalty. The world may not acknowledge who we are, they didn’t acknowledge who Christ was either. Nevertheless, we are sons of God and fellow heirs with Jesus Christ. If you are in need today, call upon His name, your inheritance is bigger than you think.
