ACCORDING TO…

ACCORDING TO HIS POWER

Eph.3:19,20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

One of the unusual characteristics of God’s word is the way it speaks to us in different ways at various times. You can read a scripture hundreds of times and suddenly you see something you have never seen before in a moment of time. One of the traps older Christians fall into is this, they think they have heard everything. They have read books, read the Bible, heard numerous sermons and teachings; there just seems like they have pretty much heard it all. That is a very dangerous place to be. In that state we have trouble hearing God in the present. Recently, I read today’s verse and saw something I had never seen before. I always new about the “far more abundantly” characteristic of God, and I knew about the power working in me part. I had never noticed or paid attention to the word “according” in that verse. That was the key to what Paul was saying. He was saying this, that God is able to do above and beyond anything we can imagine according to, or rather, in proportion to the power that is at work in us. His power displayed in and through us is conditional. It is based on the degree of yieldedness to the anointing in our lives. Wuest had some interesting comments about this verse. Check out his take on this verse.

“The power (dunamis) that is putting forth energy in us (energeō), is the operation of the Holy Spirit in His work of sanctification. God is able to do for us and answer our prayers according to the efficiency, richness, and power of the working of the Spirit in our lives. This latter is determined by the yieldedness of the believer to the Holy Spirit. Thus, the saint determines what God is able to do for him. In His inherent ability, there is no limit to what God can do in and through the saint. But the saint limits the working of God in and through him by the degree of his yieldedness to the Spirit.”

That helps me understand what Paul was saying about the greatness of God being seen in His church. Kathryn Kuhlman used to have a favorite saying in describing her own ministry. She said, “God is not looking for golden vessels, He is not looking for silver vessels. He is only looking for yielded vessels”. She said that the secret to her miracle ministry was yieldedness. How can I yield to the Lord? It is really quit simple. It starts with recognizing two things, the greatness of God’s power and your need for His power in your life. Then comes the most difficult part, it is called daily surrender. Drawing near to Him in His word and in worship and prayer. In that place of intimacy, surrender takes places. From that point you are tapping into the endless power of God.
