THIS BIRTH’S FOR YOU

THIS BIRTH’S FOR YOU

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”Luke 2:10–11

One of the beautiful truths revealed in the Christmas message is the personal nature of the birth of Christ. The announcement was made to average, common people. These were ordinary laborers, lowly shepherds, just trying to get by. The announcement was not made in the king’s palace or at the Sanhedrin, it was out in the fields with every day folks. That’s where you and I come in, the message of the birth of Christ was for people like you and me. We may not be much on man’s scale of greatness or importance but Christ was born for us. When the announcement was made to the shepherds, it was also being made for you. Martin Luther discovered this and spoke often of Christ including every one. Here is part of a Luther’s Christmas message.

“Faith is not a natural work apart from God’s grace, as the Scripture clearly teaches. Rather, the right kind of faith, the kind that flows from grace and that God’s Word demands, is firmly believing that Christ was born for you. His birth is yours and occurred for your benefit. For the gospel teaches that Christ was born for our benefit and that everything he did and suffered was for us. As the angel says here, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you.” With these words, you can clearly see that he was born for all of us. The angel doesn’t say, “A Savior was born,” but rather “A Savior has been born to you.” In the same way, he doesn’t say, “I have good news,” but rather “I bring you good news.” For you! “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” This joy is for everyone who has this kind of faith.”

The angels seemed to be echoing the words of Isaiah the prophet. As they cried out, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you”, the words of Isaiah come to mind, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
As you celebrate Christ’s birth this year I want to remind you of the personal nature of His birth. It was for you that He was born. He came because you were hurting. He came because you were in crisis. He came to bring peace into your troubled life. He came to forgive your sin. No wonder Isaiah said He would be called Wonderful, the supernatural nature of all He is comes to us in His amazing birth. Today, in Bethlehem a Savior has been born FOR YOU.
