BARRIER OF DEAFNESS
Song 1:4 “Draw me after you and let us run together!
The king has brought me into his chambers.”
¶ “We will rejoice in you and be glad;
We will extol your love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you.”
The Bible is full of miracles. Jesus public ministry was an explosion of miracles, especially healing for the sick. The beauty of the healing touch of The Lord is this, He heals the whole man. Inside and outside, He is able to make us whole. One of the common miracles demonstrated in the ministry of Jesus was healing of the deaf. Many, many times the deaf began to hear after one touch from the Master’s hand. Not only does The Lord heal the physical ear, He also amazingly heals our spiritual ears. We have all spent our whole lives deaf, unable to hear His sweet voice, our ears deaf from the aftermath of the fall. Sin has separated us all from The Lord. Only after Jesus calls us and touches us is our hearing restored. Shockingly then we can finally hear, we have entered a brand new world. Augustine spoke powerfully about this kind of hearing in “Confessions”, check this out.
“I have learnt to love You late, Beauty at once so ancient and new! I have learnt to love You late! You were within me, and I was in the world outside myself. I searched for You outside myself and, disfigured as I was, I fell upon the lovely things of Your creation. You were with me, but I was not with You. The beautiful things of the world kept me far from You and yet, if they had not been in You, they would have no being at all. You called me: You cried aloud to me; You broke my barrier of deafness. You shone upon me; Your radiance enveloped me; You put my blindness to flight. You shed Your fragrance about me; I drew breath and now gasp for Your sweet odor. I tasted You, and now I hunger and thirst for You. You touched me, and I am inflamed with love of Your peace.”
Once our spiritual senses are opened, our world is greatly enlarged. Our ability to hear, to see, to smell, to taste, and feel are restored by the touch of God. Our spiritual senses were healed and like the blind man said, “I was blind but now I see”.
Maybe your world is very small. You seem to only see and experience the same old natural things repeatedly. Boring!! Maybe it’s time for enlargement, maybe it’s time for some major change in your life.
How does the enlargement start? It starts with the wooing of God. Maybe He is calling you now, maybe you are not reading this by accident. Like Solomon said, “Draw me, and I will run after you.” Maybe like Augustine said, the beautiful things of the world are keeping you far from Him. If so, it’s time for the exchange, it’s time to change the frustration of attachment to this world for the startling beauty of the other world.
