Song 4:9 ¶ You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride;
you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes,
with one jewel of your necklace.

Parris and I fell for the movie version of “Phantom of the Opera” several years ago. Many of the songs from the soundtrack have taken on spiritual connotations in our lives. One of those songs is “Past the Point of no Return”. I know the intention of the song is a love song, but like the Song of Solomon, parts of it can take on some amazing parallels to our love and walk with the Lord. To me, the title of the song is haunting. Is there a spiritual place where there is no turning back? I believe there is. Remember when Jesus asked His disciples if they were going to leave Him like the others? There answer was quite revealing, “Lord where could we go”? They had come to that place of no return, there could be no turning back now. They had tasted the words of eternal life, there was no place to return to. Here are some of the words from the song from Phantom.

You have come here
In pursuit of your deepest urge
In pursuit of that wish which till now
Has been silent

Past the point of no return
No backward glances
Our games of make-believe are at an end.

Past all thought of “if” or “when”
No use resisting
Abandon thought and let the dream descend

What raging FIRE shall flood the soul
What rich desire unlocks it’s door
What sweet seduction lies before us?

Past the point of no return
The final threshold
What warm unspoken secrets
Will we learn
Beyond the point of no return?

Past the point of no return
No going back now
Our passion-play has now at last begun.

When will the flames at last CONSUME us?

Past the point of no return
The final threshold
The bridge is crossed
So stand and watch it burn
We’ve passed the point of no return.

Say you’ll share with me
One love, one lifetime
Lead me, save me from my solitude

Some of the words to this song scream out for our attention. We have come here in pursuit of our deepest urge. What is our deepest urge? Many are not in touch with it but our deepest urge is to be loved by God. We were created by God to need Him and to be loved by Him. Nothing else will do for us.
The next phrase that grabs my attention is “no backward glances”. There is nothing to look back to. This new love is so far superior to what we have known in the past that there is no desire to go back, no need to even glance. This new love has pulled us over, pulled us past the point of no return. The last phrase I want to mention is “our games of make believe are at an end”. We have no time for just an outward show of spirituality, we have tasted something far deeper. Our games of make believe came to a sudden stop. They all ended when we crossed over, past the point of no return.

  1. Pastor Frank, this is YES and Amen ! Also Pastor Chris gave a word for us on Sunday, Joel 2: 25, I want to add this to it, Isaiah 33: 21-23, nlt ,The Lord will be our Mighty One . Thank you, JESUS !!!

  2. Great song! as we go along with the Lord the old stuff gets dim, things dont have the same effect on us, like they once did, very little sugnifigents it once did in our lives, I think most go for what is really important thats knowing and pleaseing the lord, we hear alot of stuff on the news and at our jobs and some of this stuff has the world in fear or angry, but it effects us less knowing we will be taken outside of all this and we are only hear for a while longwer, I pray to have compassion more people really are afraid seeing this stuff going on is scary, we have peace in our lives and joy in the lord knowing he will set things right not anyone else.

  3. What’s there to look back at? The misery , the trying to satisfy fleshly desires. I talk to people all the time and for some its talking to a wall christ isn’t real to them. I’m so ready for revival so people can have a encounter. I can’t stand debating doctrine or beliefs. It’s one book one God and its dogmatic. There’s no compromise , nothing to argue about but to study and learn. Read read read. It’s interesting to live in a time like this. Teachings that just satisfy , world collapsing , prophetic events taking place how could anyone go back? Lord open our eyes and capture this city with your Love. Convict us.

  4. I truly thank for Frank and Parris Bailey…their teachings and life example has been such a blessing to us…we have gleaned much
from their walk with the Lord as our spiritual leadership
