Joel 3:18 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
I think Jonathan Edwards said it best, “Our God has a tendency to overflow”. The scriptures repeatedly refer to the Lord as a fountain. The Father is actually the fountain that all things have flowed out from. He is the origin and source of all things. Jeremiah referred to Him as the fountain of living waters, this is where we drink the life giving, life changing waters of the Holy Spirit. I will never forget the first sermon series I preached after the outpouring of 1994 at Victory Fellowship. The series was called “Learning How to Drink”. In those messages I was sharing as I was learning how to receive life from this magnificent overflowing fountain. That was eighteen years ago and I am still perfecting the art of drinking in my own personal life. Drinking in as I read the scriptures, drinking as I pray in the Holy Spirit, drinking in as I saturate in worship music, drinking as I preach. Drinking has become a way of life for me. Like any good drunk, I just live from one drink to the next.
Charles Spurgeon spoke of the overflowing nature of our God. Check out his words.
“Our Lord Jesus is ever giving, and does not for a solitary instant withdraw his hand. As long as there is a vessel of grace not yet full to the brim, the oil shall not be stayed. He is a sun ever-shining; he is manna always falling round the camp; he is a rock in the desert, ever sending out streams of life from his smitten side; the rain of his grace is always dropping; the river of his bounty is ever-flowing, and the well-spring of his love is constantly overflowing. As the King can never die, so his grace can never fail. Daily we pluck his fruit, and daily his branches bend down to our hand with a fresh store of mercy.”
The Lord is a fountain and this fountain has a tendency to overflow. Do you feel dry and empty today, it’s time to return to the overflowing fountain. If you have a challenge in front of you, He will anoint you with oil for the task. If it seems your are groping for direction in the dark, His light is brighter than the noonday sun. If you feel like you are laboring through the desert, He is that rock that will shade you on your journey. If you seem to be struggling just to get by, He is that river of abundance that is flowing your way. He is more than sufficient and loves to be needed. Draw near to Him in your weakness, drink again from this overflowing fountain. Though millions have drunk their fill, there is still an endless supply of His grace.
