Acts 2:3-4 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

For me, it was very difficult to receive my prayer language. I guess like many other people, I had been prejudiced against speaking in tongues because of things said by my parents and things I had heard in church growing up. I did not want to be called a “holy roller”, that was one of my hidden fears when I first came to Christ. In those early meetings I heard people worshipping and praying in tongues as well as giving messages from the Lord in tongues. I had a desire to receive that gift, I was just afraid of the stigma that went with it. I remember the first time I had hands laid upon me to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I felt the incredible presence of the Lord come upon me, it was as if the whole room was filled with the wind of God. As soon as this presence came upon me, I heard a voice on the inside of me, “don’t receive this gift, it might be an evil spirit’. This thought, as well as the bad case of spiritual lockjaw that I received, kept me from tasting of that heavenly gift. For the next month I sought this experience to no avail. I enjoyed those services where everyone would be singing and harmonizing in those heavenly languages, but I apparently wasn’t receiving, I still had not received my prayer language.
I guess all of those services began to wear off on me, you know the anointing is tangible and transferable. That means if you hang around it long enough, sooner or later it will get on you. Then it happened! It didn’t happen like I expected. I didn’t receive in church or even in my private prayer time, I received my prayer language one night while I was sleeping, in a dream, when I awoke I was praying in other tongues. From that day to this (38 years ago at this writing) tongues have been a daily part of my life. I love to pray in tongues, it instantly reminds of two things, the supernatural nature of my Christian life and my utter dependency upon Him, even in my prayer life.
Have you been baptized in the Spirit, or better yet, are you currently filled with the Spirit? You see, being filled with the Spirit is more than something that happened to you once upon a time, it is the current spiritual condition of your soul. Are you currently baptized, or even better, saturated with the Spirit? Jesus is our heavenly high priest, He is the minister of the heavenly sanctuary. He has a heavenly ministry, and according to the prophet John, that ministry is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. So no need to wait any longer, let’s approach this throne of grace without fear and shame and step into the baptismal waters of the Holy Spirit.

  1. It’s intriguing how people receive the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues is so many different manners! I heard of one while driving a truck,a minister named Leroy who made a movie about his life as a child, myself when crying out to God on my knees for help, then seeing many at victory assembly on airline during alter calls, also seeing them at victory assembly on Broad street, and at Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge.

  2. Wonderfull nugget. I received my prayer language Aug 3, 1976. I wish everyone could know the freedom and joy it brings.

  3. I remember the night I was saved, July 1983. Troy and Cary Salinger and a few other people laid hands on me and told my they were going to pray for me and release any evil spirits oppressing me. They began to pray and then entered into praying in tongues. I was seated and they were all standing around me in a circle. I have never even heard of the term “tongues” much less even heard someone speaking in tongues. Once I heard them speaking in tongues, a voice came to my mind and said, “They are not taking evil spirits away from you, they are putting them in you. Get up and get out of here, quick!” Well for some reason I did not get up, and allowed them to keep praying, all the while I was terrified. Later on they showed me Romans 10 and I accepted Christ as my savior and confessed Him as my Lord. Two weeks later I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and received my heavenly language. I’ve been praying in tongues ever since. Thank you Holy Spirit for helping me to stay seated that night, even though I was terrified. Your love cast out that fear and I ended up being adopted by my Heavenly Father that evening.
