Psa. 42:1-3 ¶ As the deer pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

Thirst will do strange things to you. I’ll never forget some of the trips we have taken over the years. One of these journeys led us to Africa. I always think about the drama that would unfold at the watering holes. The animals all have to drink. The predators would hang out by the lakes and the rivers, just waiting for the inevitable. Every body has to drink. The antelope and deer would take incredible risks, even to the point of losing their lives just to get a drink. Sooner or later the the drama would unfold, thirst would overcome rational behavior, suddenly the lions would have their dinner. Today’s verse of scripture speaks to us about the power of spiritual thirst. “As the deer thirsts”, have you been thirsty lately?

Spurgeon describes this thirst in the following comments, enjoy.

“He who grows not in the knowledge of Jesus, refuses to be blessed. To know him is life eternal, and to advance in the knowledge of him is to increase in happiness. He who does not long to know more of Christ, knows nothing of him yet. Whoever hath sipped this wine will thirst for more, for although Christ doth satisfy, yet it is such a satisfaction, that the appetite is not cloyed, but whetted. If you know the love of Jesus-as the hart panteth for the water-brooks, so will you pant after deeper draughts of his love. If you do not desire to know him better, then you love him not, for love always cries, Nearer, nearer. Absence from Christ is hell; but the presence of Jesus is heaven. Rest not then content without an increasing acquaintance with Jesus. Seek to know more of him in his divine nature, in his human relationship, in his finished work, in his death, in his resurrection, in his present glorious intercession, and in his future royal advent. Abide hard by the Cross, and search the mystery of his wounds. An increase of love to Jesus, and a more perfect apprehension of his love to us is one of the best tests of growth in grace.”

To the natural man, all of this is crazy talk. To the renewed mind, it is the wisdom of God. Only the Holy Spirit can awaken our hearts to make us painfully aware of our need for God. Have you been thirst lately? Have you been so thirsty, that like the thirsty deer, you are willing to break out of the mold, overcome your fears, and pursue God with all of your strength. This spiritual passion is a gift from God. Once you receive this gift, you can never return to the “normal life”.

  1. Man I love the comparison with the animals. The extreme risk involved at times etc. Just to get a drink to satisfy. Finding this out messed my world up in a since. That’s all that satisfies in this collapsing world around me. I can sit back try and prosper myself or live content putting myself in a position to drink more and come to a place where instead of God fitting in my schedule I fit in His. I encourage change to pursue Him.

  2. Peter said where can we go? he knew the Lord and was getting to know him better but still had a lot of himselve in him, as peter got to know the Lord he was changed peter hung in there faults and all, and the Lord changed him, and continued to change him, he ended up one of the main ones doing many things in his life as the Lord saw fit we are so limited but the Lord can and will change us all if we stay close to him, he did it for Peter and is no respecter of persons, it comes down to who soever will, it takes saying yes and walking with him yeilding to what he wants getting closer to him all the time his will which is so much better and with so much morte joy than what anything else can give us, joy we can have when things dont go our waty during times of sorrow, the Irs is giving you a hard time you have a mean boss many things c9oming at us, sickness toil with no releif that we can see, we still experience his joy if we stay close to him we are blessed we have the almighty with us . the world dont, when they go threw the same things beleivers and unbeleivers go threw it, all of us do. im so glad we have the lord to comfort us, lead us and change us to what he wants us to be in him Its his good pleasure to give his children all things, those of us that have children want that for all our kids. God being perfect gives us so much loves us corrects us changes us leads us died for us took beatings for us did it all that is unconditional love!

Sharing with others about how Jesus took strongholds of satan out of your life! Having bible studies in public places! Loving on your brothers and sisters in Christ! Loving on the poor in the world!
not to mention loving on your enemy! Which could be anybody at any given moment! Believers and nonbelievers play the role of our enemy at times!Isaiah 44:3-4.Eph.25-26
