THE CALLING OF GOD

THE CALLING OF GOD

Jer. 1:4-5 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

The calling of God upon the prophet Jeremiah reveals some beautiful insights into the intimacy that the Lord has with His sons and daughters. The Lord is telling Jeremiah that before he was an embryo in his mother’s womb, He knew him. The word “knew” in this passage is yada, which implies a personal knowledge by experience. The Lord is not saying He knew about Jeremiah, but the Lord says that He knew Jeremiah before he was born. That can be said about all of God’s children. This infinite, eternal God has known us from eternity. This truth was especially comforting to Jeremiah in light of the horrendous trials he experienced in his life time.

All of us go through tough times in this world. We live in a fallen world where “stuff happens”. Jeremiah lived in an unusually difficult time. His world was being over run by the Babylonians. Everything he loved was being destroyed as all of Israel was being taken into captivity. Without this personal relationship with this One who had known him from before his mother’s womb, Jeremiah would have been beyond hope. With the Lord’s mercies that were new every morning Jeremiah could stand up in the midst of everything. Here is what Jeremiah said about that in his book of Lamentations.

Lam. 3:21-25″ This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” the LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him.”

Maybe you are facing problems in your life that seem to be hopeless, nothing you can say or do can help you in your dilemma. Look to the Lord, He has known you and loved you from eternity. His love for you is real, it is tangible, it can be experienced. Just like Jeremiah experienced in his dark day, the Lord will sustain and support you in the darkest of days.

In today’s verse the Lord also told Jeremiah that He sanctified and ordained him before he was born. Sanctified means to be set apart for God’s purposes. Jeremiah was set apart and commissioned by the Lord for his impossible mission. In the same way, you were set apart from before your birth for the plan God has for you. You are not only set apart but also ordained or empowered by God for His purposes. If these words are true then we can’t fail, our future and our success is in God’s hand. What can stop His plans from being fulfilled? Remember, He has known you from eternity, all we are doing now is walking out His predetermined plans.

  1. Thank you Pastor Frank. I look to 2012 with great expectancy. I pray God’s richest blessing to you and Pastor Parris and for the Victory Fellowship body in 2012. My goal this year is to meditate more and try to shake off the stuff the world surrounds us with and to stand strong.

  2. Truly does that verse from Jeremiah speak to a Christians very soul! Sometimes when reading that verse my mind can’t help to think we had a conversation with him. But for some reason none of us can remember the content. Eph.1:3-5. Surely that thought will be answered sooner or later my brothers and sisters in Christ!

  3. I’m awe struck by His unconditional love for us, His new mercy daily, and His undeserved grace. Jeremiah 1:4-5 says so much on His grace and mercies. Before were in the womb He knew us , our weakneses, our failures in life , but has the same plan for us just demonstrates grace mery and love to fulfill what God has in store for us.

  4. Eph. 1:4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.
Eph. 1:5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family..
for he chose us in advance,
Eph. 2;10 He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
This is God’s great pleasure, to have us united with him through Christ Jesus(Eph.1:5; 1:11), to make his home in our hearts who believe(Eph.10), to invite us to come boldly and confidently into His presence(Eph.3:12), cause we have received from our God His “inheritance” (Eph.1:5) as His sons and daughters.
God is truely raising up an army to with Spirit filled weapons to do His pirit filled works He prepared beforehena. John 14:12 says “any one who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to the Father.”
