THE CALLING OF GOD
Jer. 1:4-5 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
The calling of God upon the prophet Jeremiah reveals some beautiful insights into the intimacy that the Lord has with His sons and daughters. The Lord is telling Jeremiah that before he was an embryo in his mother’s womb, He knew him. The word “knew” in this passage is yada, which implies a personal knowledge by experience. The Lord is not saying He knew about Jeremiah, but the Lord says that He knew Jeremiah before he was born. That can be said about all of God’s children. This infinite, eternal God has known us from eternity. This truth was especially comforting to Jeremiah in light of the horrendous trials he experienced in his life time.
All of us go through tough times in this world. We live in a fallen world where “stuff happens”. Jeremiah lived in an unusually difficult time. His world was being over run by the Babylonians. Everything he loved was being destroyed as all of Israel was being taken into captivity. Without this personal relationship with this One who had known him from before his mother’s womb, Jeremiah would have been beyond hope. With the Lord’s mercies that were new every morning Jeremiah could stand up in the midst of everything. Here is what Jeremiah said about that in his book of Lamentations.
Lam. 3:21-25″ This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” the LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him.”
Maybe you are facing problems in your life that seem to be hopeless, nothing you can say or do can help you in your dilemma. Look to the Lord, He has known you and loved you from eternity. His love for you is real, it is tangible, it can be experienced. Just like Jeremiah experienced in his dark day, the Lord will sustain and support you in the darkest of days.
In today’s verse the Lord also told Jeremiah that He sanctified and ordained him before he was born. Sanctified means to be set apart for God’s purposes. Jeremiah was set apart and commissioned by the Lord for his impossible mission. In the same way, you were set apart from before your birth for the plan God has for you. You are not only set apart but also ordained or empowered by God for His purposes. If these words are true then we can’t fail, our future and our success is in God’s hand. What can stop His plans from being fulfilled? Remember, He has known you from eternity, all we are doing now is walking out His predetermined plans.
