Psa. 46:10 “Cease striving and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Ex. 14:13-14 But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. “The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent.”
In was 1976 and I was itching to start my ministry. Many times we tend to get out ahead of the Lord. Of course we would hardly admit it at the time, but that is exactly what I was doing. In this incident, I was really anxious to be sent out from Bible School to plant my first church. I was selected to head up a church planting team to go to Sacramento and start a church. I had assembled my team and we were going on a tree planting event to raise money for our team. The day before we were scheduled to leave, I received today’s scripture verses from Dick Mills in a special afternoon service at our school. The Lord used those verses to stop me in my tracks and to reevaluate my direction. Out of that whole experience I ended up in New Orleans. The Lord used those verses to redirect my life. The Word of God is powerful, Paul said it is active and sharper than a two edged sword. It can penetrate our life and bring all sorts of change.
As we leave behind 2011 and head into 2012, it is important for all of us to hear from God. The Lord will take His written word, anoint it with His Spirit, and bring direction, correction, and confirmation into our lives. This can happen in various ways. Probably the most common way to receive “a word from the Lord” is in your private devotional times. As you read through the scriptures a verse will stand out to you. That is one of the ways the Lord speaks to us. This is the most common way to receive “a word”. Often, the Lord will take something you hear in a sermon, often times it will be a verse of scripture and speak it directly into your heart. This happens often in church, the Word is being preached and the Spirit is moving amongst His people. A third way we receive “a word” is through the gift of prophecy. A brother or sister may me led to give you a scriptural word which can be used powerfully by the Lord. Paul told the church in Rome, in his introductory comments, he longed to come to Rome that he could impart to them a spiritual gift that they may be established (Romans 1:11).
As we end one year and begin another year it is important to evaluate our lives, get into the Word, and expect to hear from God. He is always speaking, it is time for us to begin to listen.
