DIGGING FOR GOLD
Prov. 2:4-5 If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
And discover the knowledge of God.
One of my spiritual mentors is a teacher and prophet by the name of Dick Mills. His passion in life has always been the pursuit of the wisdom of God in the scripture and in old biblical books. Every time he would visit our church in New Orleans, he would want to take a trip to the Bible book stores and any old book shops we could find. He was like a miner searching for gold. I remember him calling me from London, England years ago to tell me of a rich treasure he had found in a London book shop. It was an original copy of Ellicott’s commentary on the Bible. I still have that edition in my home, it is one of my precious treasures that I have collected over the years. You see I have become somewhat of a “miner”, searching for hidden treasures in the ancient books , redigging those ancient wells of spiritual life. Adam Clarke spoke about the pursuit of the wisdom of God like a treasure, hear his words.
“If thou seekest her as silver – How do men seek money? What will they not do to get rich? Reader, seek the salvation of thy soul as earnestly as the covetous man seeks wealth; and be ashamed of thyself, if thou be less in earnest after the true riches than he is after perishing wealth. Hid treasures – The original word signifies property of any kind concealed in the earth, in caves or such like; and may also mean treasures, such as the precious metals or precious stones, which are presumptively known to exist in such and such mines. And how are these sought? Learn from the following circumstance: (Clarke wrote this around 1800) In the Brazils slaves are employed to scrape up the soil from the bed of the Rio Janeiro, and wash it carefully, in order to find particles of gold and diamonds; and it is a law of the state, that he who finds a diamond of so many carats shall have his freedom. This causes the greatest ardor and diligence in searching, washing out the soil, picking, etc., in order to find such diamonds, and the greatest anxiety for success; so precious is liberty to the human heart. In this way Solomon wishes men to seek for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding; and he who succeeds finds the liberty of the children of God, and is saved from the slavery of sin and the empire of death.”
What a powerful truth, Jesus said it like this, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free”. Our world today has allowed it’s value system to become twisted. We are taught to place value on things that may have no eternal value, and at the same time, treat the things with infinite value with disdain. The touch of God will awaken that hunger for the wisdom of God in our lives. What is the wisdom of God? It is God’s revelation of Himself in His written word. Here is the most stunning thing about God’s Word, “the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
