Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.

This is one of those passages of scripture that always grabs my attention, especially the part about the voice of many waters. What did that voice sound like? Why was it called the voice of many waters? Did it sound like the ocean or maybe a waterfall? I will never forget my trip to Niagra Falls several years ago. Words cannot describe the power and the intensity of that sound. I can remember the fear that I felt as I got close to the power generated by the waterfall. John was being given a picture of the power of God’s word, as well as the connection between the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, they are inseperable. John had heard the Lord speak to him before, but never like this.
The connection between the word and the Holy Spirit are critical in the christian life. We find everything that pertains to life in God’s Word. His word is energized in us by the power of the Spirit. As the Lord began this incredible revelation of Jesus Christ to the Apostle John, the Lord was impressing on his heart in this unforgettable picture the connection between the Word and the Spirit.
I often remember the first time I saw this connection in a ministry. It happened when I was first introduced to the ministry of Dick Mills. I will never forget that service, as Brother Mills gave people words from the Lord, actually scriptures, under the leading of the Spirit. Time and time again, I was amazed as the scriptures quoted were applicable to the events going on in people’s lives in that service. One particular person stands out in my mind (this was 35 years ago) more than all the others. As Brother Mills gave this Bible School student a scripture, Brother Mills asked him to approach the platform. As the student approached, Brother Dick reached out his hand. Instantly, the young man was struck to the floor by the power of God. He never got within 30 feet of the platform. This picture of the working together of the word and the Spirit has stayed with me all of these years. That is what I long for in my life, more of His word and more of His Spirit.

  1. Right on brother! there is nothing that can come close to the Holy Spirit with the word of God, nothing can produce this, ive seen people try to in the name of religion, or promoteing their church or program, non of that stuff will never measure up to what is really real I know in these days we live in, only those that stay close to the lordwill experience all he has for them and only in his strenth, not of ourselves, only in his strenth and leading

  2. God’s word is God himself, while the holy spirit cannot be separated from God just as you rightly pointed out that there’s a connection. Ezekiel 2:2 is a good illustration, “as he spoke to me the spirit entered me”
