For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
1 Cor.12:13 ESV
Everyone knows what a drinkin’ buddy is, why it is your friend you used to get together with just to go “drinkin”. I had some friends like that before I became a Christian, sometimes we would sit around and drink, listen to music, and say nothing. Our fellowship was in the drink. Once I became a Christian I lost my interest in that kind of friendship, come to think of it my friends lost their interest in me. It wasn’t like I didn’t want to have fun any more, it’s just that worldly drink lost it’s attraction. I had begun to drink of another “Spirit” and I met some new drinkin’ buddies.
If you don’t know what I am talking about let me tell you in plain, everyday language. All of us are thirsty for God, many people just don’t know it. They think they can follow the crowd to the party thinking that that is the place of real fun. But somehow the buzz just doesn’t last. We think we are having fun until “life” interrupts the party, it always does. What do I mean by life, things like the loss of your job, no money to pay rent, unexpected children with unexpected bills and responsibility, need I say more, we all know the drill. If you don’t know what I mean, someday you will. Many of us wait for life to hit us upside the head before we wake up. The good news is that the Lord is patient, merciful and waiting with open arms for you to turn to Him. That is when it gets really good. Once you begin to call on the Lord you begin to discover that He offers a drink too. The thing is, His drink is very different from the world’s beverage of choice. The drink He offers has a positive influence on every part of us. Instead of hostile and looking for a fight, this drink as a strange effect on us, it fills us with humility. Instead of promiscuous behavior, it fills us with modesty and holiness. Instead of making us sick, the Lord’s drink heals our body. As for the drinkin’ buddies, there are plenty of them. The true church is full of them. Like today’s scripture says, “He makes us all drink of one Spirit”. Before you know it you will be hanging out with your new friends, maybe listening to some worship music, not doing anything, just enjoying this brand new life. So, at the end of the day, we all have drink’ buddies. I guess the question you have to ask is what are you and your friends drinking?
