THE WITCH DOCTOR

THE WITCH DOCTOR

And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.
Mk.5:19,20

It may seem strange to you, but there are still witch doctors in Africa. Many times they are the most influential people in a community. The people will pay the witch doctor for protection from the evil spirits. When trouble comes, inevitably many people will make their trip to the witch doctor, his trade can be quite lucrative. Several years ago I went to Dar Es Salaam to work with Egon Falk in a crusade and leader’s conference. Egon is a well known missionary evangelist in Tanzania. Egon was having nightly evangelistic services and we were conducting a leadership seminar during the day. There were large crowds in the evening and about 2000 people in the daytime sessions. Unknown to us, a witch doctor had come to the meetings, trying to cast some kind of curse on us (good luck with that). He was afraid of losing some of his “customers”, that is why he came to the meetings in the first place. That week, the witch doctor got more than he bargained for, he became convicted of his sins and gave his life to Christ in those meetings. What a surprise, trying to put a curse on someone and he received a blessing instead. Not only did he accept Christ but he destroyed his fetishes publicly and testified to his conversion from the platform. The very next day, he was married by Egon, he had been living with a woman outside of marriage and wanted to make things right. To top things off, he wanted to renounce his muslim name and get a new name. He chose “Frank” to be his new name, I guess he saw the power of God in those seminars and wanted some of that himself.
Our testimony can be very influential in the lives of others. Like “Frank”, the ex-witch doctor, people are watching you and your lifestyle. When there is a sudden change, people will stop and take notice. I have no idea what happened to “Frank” from Dar Es Salaam, I am sure his life change was quite a surprise for many, and I am sure plenty people will be in heaven as a result. Has your life change been strong enough for others to even notice? When you let your light shine before men, it does make a difference. Your testimony is more powerful and influential than you know.

  1. Change! When one has an encounter with almighty God change is inevitable. I love the witch doctor’s story familiar story – different person. For his own reasons he got just a little too close. He hears the word of truth and that which he intended to undo, undid him! It brings to mind Romans 10:20.
And Isaiah is very bold and says, “I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME.”
I’m thinking Dr. Frank fell right into this category. The change that took place is undeniable and when recognized by those that knew him, Frank took advantage of the opportunity to point to Jesus as the explanation for this radical life course about-face. It is then up to each person to except or deny the truth.
If this is the same witchdoctor that so desperately wanted to be baptized that he chooses jumping into his own cauldron when no other container for baptism was available – WAHOO – Praise God! Romans 1:16 – For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  2. The witch doctor came with his basket of evil, voodoo toys to conquer Frank the evangelist but instead got slain as a ‘ unknowing customer ‘ of the Holy Spirit .The Spirit whopped him side his head with the Cross of Salvation before he knew what hit him, changing his whole way of thinking , replacing his Muslim cap with the Helmet of Salvation and his name to Frank besides. What TESTIMONY of the New Testament.!!!!! It does get any better than that. Praise and Glory to Our Savior.

Well Mark Planchard, my brother in Christ and putt-putt partner, so much for our brainstorming idea of putting Gris Gris on Pastor Frank’s putt- putt ball next time.
