HERE COMES THE SON

HERE COMES THE SON

But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;
And you shall go out
And grow fat like stall-fed calves.
Mal.4:2

Parris and I love the outdoors, from snorkeling to cycling, we love to be outside enjoying God’s world. Recently, we went for a kayak ride at sunset in the bay at Panama Beach, the view was breathtaking. Creation is filled with glimpses of the Glory of God. The sun is one of those “self portraits” the Lord has painted in His creation. In today’s verse of scripture, the Lord puts on display the healing qualities of His presence found in the wings or beams of His light. All of us have been damaged by the circumstances of this fallen world, some of the damage is our own doing, some just because “stuff” happens. As we experience the loveliness of Christ, we experience the healing found in His rays of love. He heals every part of our broken lives as we encounter the Glory of His presence. Jonathan Edwards used to take long walks in the woods for “his health” and “the enjoyment of God” in His creation. Here is something he said about the “Son of righteousness”.

“Thus on them, who fear God’s name, `the Sun of righteousness arises, with healing in his beams,’ Mal. iv. 2.. It is like the light of the morning, a morning without clouds, as the dew on the grass, under whose influence the souls of his people are as the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after rain. Thus are the beams of his beauty and brightness fitted for the support and reviving of the afflicted. He heals the broken in spirit, and bindeth up their wounds. When the spirits of his people are cut down by the scythe, he comes down upon them, in a sweet and heavenly influence, like rain on the mown grass, and like showers that water the earth.”

I love that, He “comes down upon us in a sweet and heavenly influence like the showers that water the earth”. Today, His glory is raining down, His healing beams are radiating into our lives. Everywhere His glory penetrates, lives are made whole. The Lord has made Himself available to us in the person of Jesus Christ. In the midst of a torn and broken world, He still beckons us with open arms. Today, He is calling us near. The day of healing and reconciliation is here, don’t turn away. His love is there for you. What will it take to experience His love for yourself? As soon as you call, He will answer. He loves to heal and restore the broken hearts.

  1. The sun rises for every person yet God places a conditional statement, ‘But to you who fear My name’. Everything stated next is only for that specific group.
    A closer look at ‘To fear My name’. My thoughts on this are you can fear someone or thing from just hearing about them or it, understanding and believing what you hear is true or actually coming into contact with that someone or thing and then having a stronger fear of the subject. Fear here is to be afraid, dread, or terrified but more. It is also to be awed, to honor, to inspire reverence or godly fear or awe. So recapping, the group that fears His name, most likely has at the least heard about God, understands and believes, has faith, what they hear about God is true, i.e. believers. I reference Romans10:17.
    Healing here is a word that encompasses much. Strong’s H4832 – marpe’ means 1) health, healing, cure, profit, sound (of mind), incurable (with negative). I like the fullness of incurable (with negative); nothing is incurable. Gesenius’s Lexicon says it is refreshing both of the body and the mind! Gesenius’s Lexicon also states “tranquility of the tongue, i.e. gentle, modest speech.
    This healing runs deep in that it affects the person to their core.
    So God makes a promise to the select group that fear His name, believers or His children. That promise continues through the end of this chapter and I feel has links to end times.
    He gives warning to those that are not part of this group, Mal.4:1.
    “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.”
