ABSOLUTELY

ABSOLUTELY

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
2 Ti.4:3,4

I keep finding myself returning to this passage of scripture again and again in the last several weeks. There is something quite disturbing to me in these verses, something that seems to be pointing to the very season we are currently living in. Have you noticed the rejection of authority in this current generation? I am not talking about teenage rebellion or adolescent growing pains, I am talking about the rejection of the very foundations of truth that our culture is built upon. We live in a world of no absolutes, everyone’s opinion is just as valid as the next person’s, even the Word of God has been open to “private interpretation”. John Piper spoke about the importance of the written Word of God in his book “God’s Passion for His Glory”. Check out this excerpt from this powerful book.

“Evangelical Christians, who believe God reveals himself primarily through a book, the Bible, should long to be the most able readers they can be. This means that we should want to become clear, penetrating, accurate, fair-minded thinkers, because all good reading involves asking questions and thinking. This is one reason why the Bible teaches us, “Do not be children in your thinking; be babes in evil, but in thinking be mature” (1 Cor. 14:20 RSV). It’s why Paul said to Timothy, “Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything” (2 Tim. 2:7). God’s gift of understanding is through thinking, not instead of thinking.”

I believe it is time for us to search the scriptures for ourselves. Does this precious book have the very keys to life and the foundational truth for us to build our lives upon or is it just speculative, and not the final authority in all things? Is orthodox Christianity valid in our 21st century, relevant society, or are we going to cast ourselves adrift with the thousands of others who have lost their way in this life? There seems to be a swirl of activity in the world today, people taking another look at the endless stream of recirculated religious filth, the same lies that have been sold for hundreds of years, now being spun with a hip, relevant twist. Without an absolute authority in our lives, we are just treading water in an ocean of human philosophy. Only divine revelation found in the written word of God can provide the anchor for our souls in the midst of the raging storms of life.

  1. I totally agree, people wrassle the word of God to suit them with halve truths and change the word of God into a lie, these belong to the synogoge of saten, you me or nobody gets away with messing with his word The judgement will be so strong on any that dont repent from doing this, or that messes with Gods little ones, we live in the day of deciete in this world, the gospel is watered down to serve somes benefits of not really givinmg it all to the Lord, they are very con venceing in their deceite, The word of God stands on its own, as the lord reveals it to us by the Holy Spirit, unbelivers cant get it like a beliver because it was written by the Holy Spirit and much of it can be revealed by the Holy Spirit inside all that know the Lord. I know to search the scriptures daily so we are not fooled without the word working in our lives we could be deceived as well, saten and just humanism would do their best so our faith would lack badly, our flesh would rule us if we got out of His word scarey stuff that none of us wants anyway! its so im portant to show the word unmessed with to each other, and to encorage one another , my wisdom would lead myselve and others asttray even with good intentions only his word will bring us close to him and lead us into his truth, He has trusted us that know him with his word I have a healthy fear of making sure i dont violate his trust with it, people that do have bad motives or want their fleash to benefit wait to they answer for that one, they will unless they repent and get it right with the lord we all need to pray for one another that we stay walking in gods word.

  2. I agree whole heartily with this message. Human nature has us gravitate to things that are comfortable. If a situation, conversation or philosophy is uncomfortable humans have a knack for removing themselves, arguing it away or changing the meaning to better suit them or their ambitions. We all like to feel as though we are ‘GOOD’, or feel good about ourselves. Yesterday’s devotion touched on this.
Immediately after my salvation my thirst for the things of God was unquenchable, I wanted more. There was and is a whole lot out there, there being the world. Certain things I heard or read just didn’t ring true. Then I learned always go back to the word of God as my litmus test. I thank God He placed me in a church that impressed the importance of biblical foundations.
I thank everyone that has taken the time to teach me how to study the word of God that I may know sound doctrine and not. This is not a knock on anyone but I find myself validating messages I hear, even in my church, against God’s word. More times than not it is time consuming. I thank God for giving me time to dive into His word that I am not tossed around with all the foolishness of man. I second the motion, quoting Pastor Frank, “I believe it is time for us to search the scriptures for ourselves.” The ‘ourselves’ is not just pastors and leaders but all children of God.

  3. Pastor Bailey you are so ABSOLUTELY right for just a few nights ago on the Bill O’Reilly Show, a conservative commentator, there arose the question for discussion, “Is there really a Hell? Then there is the national leader issue of will Obama , who has stated ‘ we are no longer a nation of Christians’, cancel the second national prayer day this year again, yet allow the muslims to have their national prayer day for two years in a row. Christians and biblical truths are under attack in the media like never before and we must pray for the Lord’s tolerance until we can return to biblical reading , pray for the Holy Spirit to grant us the Wisdom from such reading thereby extracting ourselves from the prince of darkness’ attack ( i.e abortion, misinformation, etc.) and hold on our homeland or we will find ourselves judged by Him, conquered and allowed to be spread afar as God’s people were in the Old Testament.
