HIS GOINGS FORTH

HIS GOINGS FORTH

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
from everlasting.
Micah 5:2

What an incredible prophesy about the coming of our Lord. Micah prophesied the specific town, Bethlehem, and the specific region, Ephratah, where Our Savior would be born. He also spoke about the mysterious eternal nature of Jesus, the Word who became flesh. Micah spoke of “His goings forth” which some of our church fathers applied to the eternal generation of the Son of God. Mathew Henry expressed this eternal miracle as he described Christ as the rays of God’s Glory from eternity.
“It is he that is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting, from the days of eternity, as the word is. Here we have, His existence from eternity, as God: his goings forth, or emanations, as the going forth of the beams from the sun, were, or have been, of old, from everlasting, which is so signal a description of Christ’s eternal generation, or his going forth as the Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, that this prophecy must belong only to him, and could never be verified of any other. From everlasting to everlasting thou are God, and can be applied to no other than to him who was able to say, Before Abraham was, I am. Dr. Pocock observes that the going forth is used (Deut. viii. 3) for a word which proceeds out of the mouth, and is therefore very fitly used to signify the eternal generation of him who is called the Word of God, that was in the beginning with God, John 1.”

Wow! Great is the mystery of God. The eternal Word, the Father’s idea and expression of Himself born in Bethlehem. The Creator enters into His creation.
The Son of God, who has existed from eternity, born to a jewish teenager from Nazareth. God’s power cloaked in the weakness of infancy, Immanuel has come. Two generations, the Son of God begotten from eternity without a mother, the son of man, born of a virgin without a human father. This is the greatest of all mysteries, concealed in the Father’s heart until the fullness of time, revealed by the Spirit in the person of His Son birthing the greatest celebration of all time. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

  2. WOW is right! Only God!!!
Just my rewording of Micah 5:2 to further blow me away!

    “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me,
    (Me)!
Whose goings forth are from of old,
    from everlasting.

  3. I looked into this scripture a little more and here is what I found:

    Literal translation:
And thou, Beth-Lehem Ephratah, Little to be among the chiefs of Judah! From thee to Me He cometh forth — to be ruler in Israel, And His comings forth [are] of old, from the days of antiquity.

A look at this and we see what the Hebrew is saying:

Bethlehem – translated – ‘house of bread’.
Ephratah – translated – ash-heap: place of fruitfulness or another name for Bethlehem.

though you be little (tsa`iyr) – insignificant in the sight of man, deemed unimportant. Even though this city is mentioned as far back as Genesis, the birth place of King David; it is esteemed not – just like He who came out of it. It is that place between here and there. Its’ claim to fame is its is where God stepped out of Heaven and into this world. Now that is one heck of a claim!

Among the thousands (eleph) of Judah – I think a more accurate translation would be ‘among the whole’ of Judah or ‘compared to the rest’ of Judah. A look at Judah and you will see what is considered its’ main cities, around forty. These cities include but are not limited to the walled cities of Judah, Bethlehem not being among them. This keeps with the aforementioned theme, insignificant and unimportant.

Yet out of you shall come forth to Me (yatsa) – this verb implies to come forth with a purpose.

The One to be Ruler (mashal) in Israel, mashal is a verb meaning to rule or better yet, have dominion over. At first glance it seems to be translated into a noun – Ruler. I prefer the verb but at least they translated it capitol ‘R’ Ruler! This dominion has the power to do anything. This same verb is seen in Isaiah 40:10. This passage mentions God’s arm ruling over them and Isaiah 52:10 how God’s holy arm was made bare to the eyes of all nations and to the ends of the earth so they could see His salvation. A reference to Jesus?

Whose goings forth (mowtsa’ah) – one’s place of origin

are from of old (qedem), this word could be an adverb or noun. The root word is a verb meaning to come before or to lead.

from everlasting. (yowm) This is a noun whose general meaning is a period of time. A really cool meaning is when used as a temporal reference; yesterday, today, tomorrow! Wow – that sounds familiar!

(owlam) This is a noun somehow connected to the previous word as a furtherance to explain what period of time – interestingly enough one of its’ meanings is continuous existence, eternity and sometimes used as ‘what is hidden’.

Now to try and wrap all this up:

    “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are insignificant compared to the rest of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One with purpose, dominion over Israel,
Who comes from before this period of time,
    from eternity.
